Looking After Yourself At Home

Staying at home sounds like should be easy, but for many of us there are some physical and mental challenges to get through. With this in mind, here’s our quick guide to looking after yourself at home to help you make the most it.

Routine

Plan Your Time

While it might not be necessary to stick to your usual daily routine right now, the NHS does recommend that we get up and get ready for the day we usually would. It’s time to plan what is going to be your ‘new normal’ for the time being. Many of us will find it comforting to have a plan and schedule for the days and weeks ahead. Your plans can include time for relaxation, exercise, hobbies and learning new skills. Keeping our minds and bodies active will help us to get through this unsettling time.

Relax

Make Time For Yourself

It’s tempting to get into the mindset of keeping yourself busy all the time to get through this downtime. Whilst this is important to do, equally you can use this time for some self-care and relaxation.

At home relaxation activities can be anything from stress-busting gentle workouts such as Yoga to reading a book or digging out an old puzzle. If you’re chilling out in front of the TV, add try giving yourself a facial or massage at the same time to really put your mind and body at ease.

Keep A Balance

Look after your mind and body by including some exercise in your daily activities, this is just as important and relaxing. There are plenty of home workout apps and videos available for all abilities, so you can find something that works for you.

If you’re using this time to improve your fitness, don’t forget the importance of recovery! After a good workout, allow yourself time to cool down and stretch. If you’ve exercised intensely, you can give yourself an at-home deep tissue massage to soothe your muscles and relieve any tension.

Reconnect

Stay Social

While we must be socially distant physically, you can still stay connected with your loved ones. Not only for the sake of your well-being, but also for theirs. Through technology whether it be messages or video chats, keep in touch and remind each other that we’re in this together. Virtual quizzes and game nights are a fun way to get everyone together from the comfort of your own home.

The same goes for the people in your household – it’s easy to take them for granted or get frustrated when you’re spending so much time together! Remember to take time for each other but also give each other space.
